Obesity in Malaysia~~~

This was the speech given by our Minister of Health Malaysia in 12/04/2010~~~~

KUALA LUMPUR: The rate of obesity is expected to soar with the proposed lowering of the World Health Organisation’s body mass index (BMI) reading.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Malaysia’s overweight and obesity problems may be more serious compared with other countries in the region.

The lowering of the BMI cut-off point from 25 to 23 would put the country on par with the United States, some European Union countries and the Middle East, he said at the launch of the Malaysian Obesity Prevention Council here yesterday.

“A 2004 study involving 5,000 students aged between 12 and 18 revealed an overweight prevalence of 20.3 per cent among males and 17.7 per cent among females,” he said.

Liow said surveys by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia among primary schoolchildren in four regions showed the overweight and obese figures, which stood at 10.5 per cent and six per cent in 2002, had risen to 15.6 per cent and 8.4 per cent in 2008.

Another survey, conducted in 2006, showed that two in five adult Malaysians were either overweight or obese, a 70 per cent and astronomical 250 per cent jump within a decade respectively.

Liow said the proposal to lower the BMI cut-off point was because of the higher risk of obesity-related diseases such asdiabetes, high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol at BMI above 23 among Asians.

“We’re looking into this proposal and we are making efforts to collate more data from the region before it can be implemented.

“More worrying is the increasing prevalence of obesity among adolescents, which according to a Klang Valley survey, had jumped from one per cent in 1990 to six per cent in 1997.

“The most significant government policy issue in health promotion today is improving the dietary habits and nutritional status of Malaysians under the National Nutrition Policy.

“Promoting and improving weight management of Malaysians have become a key mission of the Health Ministry working in collaboration with other ministries and agencies.”

The ministry also focused on the importance of a healthy diet through the 10-year National Plan of Action for Nutrition from 2006 to 2015.

“We will be hiring 300 nutritionists for health clinics with 51 posts to be filled this year.”

~~~we must act among this~~~
